Grand Opening of United Microelectronics Centre (Hong Kong) Limited
(Hong Kong – 28 May 2019) The Grand Opening Ceremony of United Microelectronics Centre (Hong Kong) Limited (UMEC(HK)) was held at the Hong Kong Science Park today, officiated by Mr. Wu Manqing, President of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Mr. Liu Zhi Ming, Deputy Inspector, Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs of the Liaison Office, Mr. Charles Ng, Associate Director-General of Investment Promotion and Dr. Mei Kei Ieong, CEO of UMEC(HK).
We are honoured by the attendance and support of the top executives and industry pioneers from numerous leading organizations, universities and associations, such as Hong Kong Science and Technology Park Corporation, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, IEEE Hong Kong Section, Hong Kong Design Centre, Hong Kong Productivity Council, to name a few. Collaborative effort was expected in the future to facilitate the AI and 5G technology advancement and the industry development.
Mr. Wu Manqing, President of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering said, “In this interconnected era, I hope we can be more connected and adhere to innovation and resources sharing, turning dream into reality and facilitating innovation and development of the society.” He hoped that UMEC(HK) can make use of its core competencies and be innovative, so as to inject new vitality into betterment of our living.
“AI chip and 5G technologies are the key to the future development of nearly every industry and the foundation of the smart cities. To support the edge AI chips development, we are dedicating resources to drive an integration between the AI algorithmic design and efficient hardware implementation with two applications, high performance video processing and ultra-low power AIoT. In parallel, the heterogeneous integration design service would be our gateway to connect various IC design houses and backend manufacturers. Last, a research on AI silicon photonics chips will be further expanded to the platform project and toward the field trial prototype,” said Dr. Mei Kei Ieong, CEO of UMEC(HK).
“The HKSAR Government is actively developing Hong Kong as a regional hub of innovations and technologies. With the resources and support provided, UMEC(HK) will promote cooperation among the industry stakeholders and universities and become an innovative partner in the microelectronics ecosystem. We are devoted to nurturing industry talents, fostering R&D initiatives and accelerating commercialisation of the technologies.”
The ceremony was an exciting moment that marked the grand opening of UMEC(HK). The support from the government, academia and industry will drive us further in AI chips & systems and 5G applications development and enable us to make valuable contributions to the entire industry.
