UMEC’s Ultra-low Power Edge AI Chip Wins Silver Award at Hong Kong ICT Awards 2021
United Microelectronics Centre (Hong Kong) Limited (UMEC) is pleased to announce that its Ultra-low Power Edge AI Chip has garnered the Silver Award in the ICT Startup (Hardware and Devices) Category of the Hong Kong Information and Communications Technology Awards (HKICT Awards) 2021.
The HKICT Awards, established in 2006, is considered the most prestigious award on Information and Communication Technologies in Hong Kong. This year, the award presentation ceremony was held at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 29 November 2021, attended by Mr. Paul Chan Mo-po, GBM, GBS, MH, JP, Financial Secretary of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, other senior government officials and industry executives.
UMEC’s Ultra-low Power Edge AI Chip is developed by their elite team which excels in low-power AI computing solution. They have applied state-of-the-art technologies to significantly improve the energy efficiency for AI processing, with high accuracy and speed. With power consumption as low as 6 milliwatts, the chip can support year-long standby and operation of portable intelligent devices without recharge. By performing AI computation at the edge, it allows the devices to get rid of slow internet connection and enhance data privacy and security. It supports the portable devices to perform a wide range of AI functions like device wake-up, object detection, image and speech classification, voice control, etc.

UMEC’s proprietary technologies have effectively cut power consumption to milliwatts, without giving up the accuracy of the algorithm. We foresee a large demand and market potential of the chip, whereas a large variety of battery powered devices – from ear buds, smart sensors, smart watches to cell phones – will need it to enhance functionality and enrich user experience. It is also a hardware enabler for metaverse, AIoT, and personalised services.”
